3 Tips to capture professional photos with your iPhone

We all know the value of branding sessions for your business - but sometimes there are times where there is value in capturing your own content. Maybe you’re in between branding sessions, or maybe you have new products coming out for your business, or maybe you're saving up for a session in the future. Either way, knowing how to take professional, clear & effective photos with your iPhone is a superpower that we want you to have!

1) Position your subject in proper lighting

So what is proper lighting? As a general rule, us photographers always love direct light & diffused. This means you want the light coming from the same direction as your phone. For example, standing with the light from the window coming over your shoulder, onto your subject and/or product. If the sun is very bright and strong, consider diffusing the light with something that lets in some of the light (like a curtain).

We also try to stay away from artificial lights that aren’t lighting equipment. Think a lamp, an overhead light, etc. These can cast a coloured glow and can create odd shadows on whatever you're taking a photo of.

2) Play with Angles

Perspective is everything, literally! Play around with different angles when shooting a subject and/or a product. Make sure there isn’t too much ‘dead space’ on either side of whatever you’re shooting (think a photo of a person with 20% space above their head, and then 80% below their feet, it’d look unbalanced). Overhead flat-lays or straight on (with a bit of a down angle) are some of our favourites!

3) Use the Lightroom Mobile App

Did you know you can access a professional photo editing program on your phone? Lightroom mobile is our go-to for iPhone photos in a pinch. Remember that iPhone photos don’t have as much data as a photo taken with a professional camera, so the adjustments made in Lightroom should be minimal. Think about editing shadows, any colour hues and any other minor changes.
